Learning to read is a process that requires a lot of practice. First, children learn to combine read letters into a syllable. This leads them to read whole words and eventually sentences and texts. This is initially tedious and time-consuming for the child. It's not uncommon for children to initially not enjoy reading. However, some words appear very frequently in texts, such as the words "and," "the," or "but." When a child recognizes such words at a glance, they don't have to read them letter by letter. This allows them to read more fluently and focus more on comprehension while reading. They suddenly understand what they're reading and enjoy it more. The Blitzlesen app trains lightning-fast word recognition in a playful way. The goal of the app is to increase children's sight vocabulary – i.e., the number of words the child recognizes at a glance. For this purpose, the app contains various pre-prepared word lists (e.g., 100 common words or the basic vocabulary lists from various German states). The words from the lists are displayed individually on the tablet for a short time. The child must recognize these words as quickly as possible and read them aloud. Not only the display duration can be customized, but also the displayed words. This allows the word lists to be modified, or custom word lists (e.g., with words matching the child's textbook) to be created. The app has already proven its worth in primary schools, as it was developed and tested in cooperation with practitioners: It can be used with the whole class (reading the words aloud in chorus) or for individual children (also at home).
