About Roadside 66
Roadside 66 (tm) places offbeat and essential landmarks from U.S. Route 66 in the hands of road trippers. The mobile app, powered by offbeat travel authority RoadsideAmerica, is jam-packed with all the thorough research and wit fans have come to expect. The app pulls together detailed maps and trip planning tools, stories, and beautiful photos (some by veteran Roadie photographers). Featuring more than 1,600 points-of-interest (POIs) in a corridor along Route 66 (certified in 1926, decertified 1985, subsequently and gloriously revived, to celebrate its 100th year anniversary in 2026).
You’ll encounter popular classics, such as the Blue Whale, Jackrabbit Trading Post; quirky sights: Singing Highway, Bottle Tree Ranch, Santa Anna's Leg, road phantoms, Uranus! Giant statues, neon signs, restored gas stations and motels, folk art environments, murals, weird museums, Golden Age ruins, and oddball aspects of the historical highway.
Also: plenty of over-the-top tourist traps and photo ops!
Backseat Know-It-All -- an arcane knowledge booster -- starts each driving day with an illuminating factoid or two. For hardcore Rt. 66 veterans, a mysterious toggle reveals even more points-of-interest. Our writers report on unique characters, from the savvy huckster to the sleepless owner, from the over-caffeinated local booster to the otherworldly artist. Ready to open that third eye? Room in the trunk for souvenirs? This app is your indispensable highway spirit guide.
The Roadside 66 team is led by the original book authors, who pioneered a previously undefined tourism category (offbeat, ironic, quirky) and a unique approach to road trips. They (re-)discovered, named, and mapped “The Muffler Men,” must-stop Route 66 icons. The app shares their latest research.
They look forward to helping adventurers optimize their experience with Roadside 66.
